Centuries of Silence 7 October 2023 - 11 February 2024

This rich exhibition is devoted to the return of an incomparable treasure of Namur heritage, a manuscript that disappeared and was forgotten for centuries: the Antiphonary of the Abbey of Salzinnes.

This unique event in Belgium is an exceptional opportunity to retrace the history of this illuminated manuscript, produced in 1554-1555 for the prioress of the Abbey of Salzinnes and former cantor Julienne de Glymes.

This illuminated choir book, recently found and restored, has been preserved since the 19th century in Canada… And it will only remain on our territory for a few months…

In addition to the history of the abbey, the exhibition reveals all the secrets of this remarkable manuscript which combines not only various forms of artistic expression – the arts of bookbinding, painting and miniature, music and song … – but also highlights the role of women in its execution, destination and use.

Through a multitude of educational devices, the exhibition aims to place the manuscript in its historical and cultural context through the use of paintings, artefacts, maps, archival documents, tools and videos.

With the Antiphonary as its centerpiece, the exhibition will unfold in a series of sections, each devoted to a specific theme of its history, production and use.
